[ Mariske Broeckmeyer ] is a Brussels-based singer and researcher, creating music and sound art that oscillate between avant-pop and voice-collage. Anger's Family Tree is out! An album by MARIS x Haerens x Lootens
In 2023 MARIS entered a new collaboration with poet Astrid Haerens and cellist Jasmijn Lootens. This musical-literary project centered around the effects of power structures on the female body was fueled by their shared love of experimental music and improvisation. Together, they inhabit the void between poetry and music, presenting a brand new album entitled Anger's Family Tree (W.E.R.F. Records) during a JazzLab Tour in January 2024. The EP resulted from the research on migraine and voice and serenades the search for a metaphor that truly captures the pain while lamenting the stigmatizing forces this condition brings. This 3 track EP is the follow up to By Virtue Of The Absurd released last fall on W.E.R.F. records. Artwork by Jeroen Van der Fraenen.
Cripur Cripour is a ‘nonperformance’ on migraine and voice that wavers between an interactive opera and installation art. In November and December of 2021 MARIS presented the album during a tour hosted by JazzLab.
By Virtue Of The Absurd was created by MARIS in close collaboration with singer Silke Blankers. The band operates on full force when Louis Evrard, Laurens Smet and Thomas Jillings join the liveset. The album is a musical reverie that flutters between sound and voice, experiment and song.
